Meeting Summary:

The Brecksville-Broadview Heights City School District Board of Education held a regular meeting on November 20, 2024, at 6:00 PM. The meeting was live-streamed via YouTube and recorded for later viewing.

Key Discussions and Actions:

  • CVCC Board Representative: The board discussed the need to appoint a representative to the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center (CVCC) Board for a one-year rotating seat. Board Member, Eva O’Mara, volunteered to serve as the representative.
  • Policy Updates: The board reviewed numerous policy updates, including revisions related to cell phone usage, student conduct (including guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in the classroom), and a new policy specifically addressing artificial intelligence.
  • Cell Phone Policy: The board discussed the district's revised cell phone policy, which aims to limit classroom distractions while also teaching students responsible technology usage. The policy designates "green zones" where cell phone use is permitted and "red zones" where it is prohibited. A presentation and discussion was provided by Mr. Jakub, HS Principal.
  • Financial Report and Five-Year Forecast: The treasurer presented the district's financial reports and the five-year forecast. The forecast indicated potential deficit spending in the coming years and highlighted the need to explore additional revenue sources or expenditure reductions.
  • Campus Master Plan Update: The board provided an update on the Campus Master Plan, including the demolition of the Hilton Elementary building and the proposed addition of a driveway off Mill Road to alleviate traffic congestion.
  • Hearing of the Public: Community members raised concerns about the potential impact of the proposed roadway on neighboring properties, including issues related to light encroachment and water runoff. The board acknowledged these concerns and emphasized their commitment to being good neighbors and working with the community.
  • The Colony Cupboard: A presentation was given on "The Colony Cupboard," a program providing essential supplies, food, and hygiene products to students in need throughout the district.

Other Discussions:

  • Board Policy Committee: The board discussed recommended updates to policies regarding the criminal background check system, cell phone usage, attendance, artificial intelligence, and several others.
  • Permanent Improvement Committee: The board discussed ongoing improvements to the district's facilities, including the ongoing replacement of roofs, HVAC systems, and old buses.
  • Superintendent's Personnel Recommendations: The board discussed the hiring of additional staff, including a school counselor, a speech language pathologist, bus drivers, and others.
